Lecturing & teaching
For the past seven years I have been lecturing part-time at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in the Interaction Design department. I wrote a course on UX Design and as of last year this has broadened to include Design Thinking and a new focus on design problems situated in social contexts.
Most recently this work culminated in the “2nd Academics and Practitioners Round Table: Teaching IA” workshop held at the 2014 IA Summit in San Diego, California.
My thinking on practice, theory and education has been in partnership with Terence Fenn. We have created www.fennhobbs.com as a resource to our scholarly papers, teaching and joint project work.
Over the years I have conducted extensive on-project skills development and training and from time-to-time offer corporate training.
I have guest lectured on topics relating to Information Architecture and User Experience Design at Kent State University (Ohio, USA), the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, SA), Michaelis School of the Arts, Cape Town University (Cape Town, SA), the Vega School of Brand Communications (Johannesburg, SA) and the University of Pretoria (Pretoria, SA).
Early in my career I co-wrote and taught an introductory course to the Internet (The “Content Provider 1” in 1997) at Krypto +, a research and development company in Observatory, Cape Town.
